Assessment of Longliver (over 90 yrs) Viability Based on the Cardiospiroergometric,
Biochemical and Hemostatic Indices

 Aging is associated with decline in organizm viability (or its physiological functioning). Longlivers represent an ideal clinico-physiologic model of physiological process of aging and atherosclerosis development. The aim of the present study was to assess the viability of men, aged 90 yrs and over, using cardiospirometric, biochemical and hemostatic methods. In total 82 men were enrolled in the study (age range 20 - ≥90 yrs; 20 - 29 yrs - n=30, 60 - 74 yrs - n=30, ≥90 yrs - n=22). Measurements of serum lipoproteins revealed absence of hyperlipoproteinemia in our longlivers. This slows down the progression of atherosclerosis in coronary, cerebral and other arteries to a large extent. Thus, in this group of patients physiosclerosis considerably surpasses atherosclerosis. Hypertension (160/90 mm Hg) was observed in 44% of old patients, and in 54% of longlivers there were signs of coronary insufficiency (CI) on the ECG. The severity of CI in the hypertensives did not differ from that of the normotensives. Thus, hypertension in this age-group could not be considered as a risk-factor for CI development.

The quantitative cardiospiroergometric indices obtained on the ECGs of the old people with CI did not differ statistically from the indices obtained for age-matched controls (no signs of CI on the ECG).
