Key words: chronic heart failure, sympato-adrenergic system, refracterin.

According to the data, sympatho-adrenergic system plays a leading role in progression of Chronic Heart Failure (CHF). The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of a new cardiotropic agent – refracterin- on the sympatho-adrenergic system in patients with CHF (NYHA II-IV class).

In total, 81 consecutive patients (mean age 55.2±4.2 yrs) who experienced MI  complicated with HF were divided into two groups: Gr. 1 - patients treated with conventional agents; and Gr. 2 - conventional treatment in combination with refracterin (iv infusion with 5% glucose). The study duration was 14 days. The study population underwent clinical-biochemical examination at entry and after the end of the study.

Subsequently, post study data indicate that in Gr. 2 compared to Gr. 1, EF elevated by »5.4%, Opine index increased to normal and patients symptomatically felt better.  These data are in correlation with approximately two-fold increase in noradrelanin concentration, and elevation of noradrenalin/ adrenalin ratio  (r=-0.72 p<0.005) up to the lowest border of normal range.

In conclusion, addition of refracterin to traditional therapy improved sympatho-adrenergic functions, and, thus, clinical symptoms in our patients.  This may be due to antyoxidative, antyischaemic and antyhypoxemic effects of refracterin.
