Key words: heart failure, carvedilol.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of 6-month carvedilol therapy on left systolic and diastolic ventricular functions in patients with heart failure (HF) caused by myocardial infarction or dilated cardiomyopathy. Fifty patients (19 women and 31 men, mean age 59.8 ± 8.1) with NYHA-II-IV class of HF and ejection fraction < 30% were studied. The patients were divided in two groups. The patients of study group received carvedilol and enalapril, the patients of control group – enalapril only. If necessary, patients from both groups received diuretics and nitrates. Results of our study allow us to conclude that carvedilol significantly improves left ventricular systolic and diastolic functions.
