The Professional Record Continuously Develops

“The doctor belongs to himself, he always belongs to the public” –said Dr. Nodar Kipshidze a few years ago in the interview given to one of the journalists. And, indeed, “the highest representatives of the spiritual hierarchy” – as the German writer Herman Hesse used to call them – do belong to anyone expert themselves.

Even a desire to become a doctor totals the heroism and nobody knows when it is easier to start: when one is a pioneer or has the honor to develop the work started by the prominent predecessors. Anywhere in the world, and especially in Georgia, it is quite hard to be a child of a well-known person, and therefore Mr. Nodar Kipshidze could not avoid carrying the name of the ‘great person’s son” with dignity.

His father, Mr. Nikoloz Kipshidze was a person with distinguished talent who greatly contributed to the development of Georgian Medical School in 1908 Mr. Nikoloz Kipshidze graduated Tbilisi First Male Gymnasium with gold medial award and in 1914 – the Military-Medical Academy of St. Petersburg.

Mr. Nikoloz Kipshidze’s works were published not only in Georgian but also in German and French. His investigations were of great support for the diagnostics of diseases unknown in Georgia that time (strongyloidiasis, balantidiasis, coccidiosis, lambliosis, trichomoniasis, tropical abscese of the liver, peptic ulcers of stomach and duodenum) as well as the implementation of effective treatment methods and development of experimental researches. The experience gained through the overseas practices (1914-1916 work in Iran; 1929 –1930-work at the Paster Institute in Paris) widely broaden Mr. Nikoloz Kipshidze’s scientific horizon. During his life he never stopped delivering pedagogical services. In 1931 he became the elected Head of the Internal Diseases Chair of the Stomatological Faculty. From 1951 –1952 to the end of the life he led the Therapeutical Chairs at the Tbilisi State Medical Institute and the State Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education. He is the author of various interesting scientific papers. The first Georgian original manual on internal diseases also belongs to him.

Mr. Nikoloz Kipshidze was open – hearted with his patients. Mr. Nodar Kipshidze, his son, often remembers his father’s words of wisdom: “regardless the scientific degrees and awards, there is no chance to carve out a career for oneself without obtaining the mutual respect between the doctor and the patient”.

Fortunateny, the grateful nation requited the great doctor with naming after him one-ofthe strongest medical centers in the country – Tbilisi Republican Hospital.

Very often, the children of the well-known people have to hide in the shade of their parents and are hardly able to make their own efforts. The case of Mr. Nodar Kipshidze proves vise versa. He lives very interesting and full life, denying rest and relaxation, and bearing his age well. He highly values a man’s word and business and always supports young scientists.

“That who has never been bound apprentice, would never become a master” – used to say the great Georgian writer Konstantine Gamsakhurdia. Together with his father Mr. Myasnikov the distinguishe specialist – was Mr. Nodar Kipshidze’s tutor at Moscow Therapeutic Institute when he was having his doctorate studies in 1954-1957.

Under the supervision of Mr. Myasnikov Mr. Nodar Kipshidze was the first to develop the model of development of myocardial infarction caused by combination of coronary atherosclerosis and physical exertion.

It also should be mentioned, that the issues scoped within Mr. Nodar Kipshidze’s sphere of interests are still important today. The best proof for this could be the issue on prolonged septic endocarditis, its features and diagnostics were the very first themes that Mr. Nodar Kipshidze started his scientific studies with.

After returning from the UN (New York), where he worked since 1957, he dedicated all his efforts to the establishment of the Scientific Research Institute of Therapy. He headed the Institute even through 1963-65 when he was working as a Director of Biological and Pharmacological Department of the WHO. Today Therapeutic Institute still continuous its existence under his leadership, and is one of the strongest therapeutic basis in Georgian.

Mr. Nodar Kipshidze never put aside investigations of atherosclerosis problems. He is the first among the Georgian scientists who initiated researchers in effectiveness of a new group of lipid correcting substances – particularly the two strongest representatives of the group are atorvastatin and Simvastatin – in treatment of stable atherosclerosis and declared considerations about the paleographical features of these drugs.

Mr. Nodar Kipshidze was the pioneer in the former Soviet Union who started his studies of less known diseases, such as cardiomiopathy. His hypothesis on transformation of viral myocarditis into dilated cardiomyopathy brought him wider recognition.

Mr. Nodar Kipshidze was also the first scientist in the former Soviet Union who started researches in mitral prolapse. For the monograph on the latter issue published in 1986, he and his co-authors were awarded with the Myasnikov.

Mr. Nodar Kipshidze established the first therapeutic-scientific center of myocardial infarction. He was awarded with two governmental prozes for the valuable input in investigations of the above-mentioned pathologies. The first – the Georgian State prize (1981) for the implementation of new methods in treatment and diagnosis of myocardial infarction and the second the USSR State Prize (1989) for the implementation of the methodology for treatment of cardial ischemia. He was the youngest among the medical scientists who received the title of the Honorable Scientist.

Mr. Nodar Kipshidze initiated implementation of electronic methods in cardiacarhythmia and (together with his co-authors) cardial ischemia treatment, and ultrasound research methodology widely recognized throughout the world.

Today the scope of the scientists is focused on the very important top of modern medicine – the angiogenesis. He believes that the achievements in this field will greatly support treatment of patients with coronary atherosclerosis and atherosclerosis of lower extremities. Mr. Nodar Kipshidze supervised 120 scientific candidate and 40 doctorate theses, he chairs the Scholastic Degree Awarding Committee in the field of Internal Diseases” – He presides the associations of: Georgian Internsists. Atherosclerosis, and Gerontology, and the Association – Doctors Against the Nuclear War. He is the Honorary President of the Georgian cardiomyophaty Association.

Professor Nodar Kipshidze is the member of the Georgian Academy of Science, Russian Medical Academy, Partnership of American Doctors, Academies of Science of Washington and New York, American Association of Internal Medicine. He is an elected honorary member of the International Biographic Center of England.

Professor Nodar Kipshidze is the member of editorial boards of the following magazines: “Therapeutic Archive”, “Cardiology”, “International Medical Research”, “Technology and Age”, “Heart”, “The Messenger”, “Georgian Medical Messenger”, “Cardiology and Internal Medicine – Achievements and Problems”.

“…For more that 50 years you are carrying out active work aimed at the prosperity of Georgian medicine. You are great scientist and pedagogue, a man of progressive thinking, who was the tuitor of several generation of young physicians. I, with great pleasure, remember our meetings… You are the person, our nation is proud of. I wish you health and longevity…”_ Writes Mr. Eduard Shevardnadze, the president of Georgia, in his letter sent upon the 75th Birthday Jubilee addressed to Acad. N. Kipshidze the cavalier of the Order of Honour.

Professor Nodar Kipshidze had and exclusive feedback in the life for his hard work not only in his own country, but worldwide. His name was included in the guidebook “500 Great Brains at the Beginning of XXI Century” – published in 2002 by the Institute of the “BWW” Society. The traditions of the professional development, started by his grandfather (Mr. Nikoloz Kipshidze) and father (Mr. Nodar Kipshidze) are successfully continued by Nikoloz (Nika) Kipshidze Junior – the worldwide recognized scientist.

Before leaving for St. Luca’s Hospital and Medical College of Millwork, USA, Nika Kipshidze worked under the supervision of the well-known surgeon Mr. Burakowsky at Moscow Center for Cardiovascular Surgery. The Center occupies the most important place in the formation of the young professional. Here, in 1982 and 1989 he accomplished his candidate’s and doctoral theses, and in 1991-1992 prior to leaving for the USA he supervised the Catheterization Lab.

The fact that Mr. Nika Kipshidze received his permission to work without passing the residential exams was the distinguished matter for the exclusively talented professional in the USA.

In 1999 Nika Kipshidze became the director of the Endoluminal Molecular and Catheter Intervention Department in New York’s Cardiovascular Foundation. From the same time he chairs the department of cardiovascular diseases and genetic therapy of the Tbilisi Scientific-Research Institute of Therapy.

In 2002 professor Nika Kipshidze was elected the Director of the Experimental Physiology and Pharmacology Division of the New Yourk (Lenox Hill) Cardio Vascular Institute.

The wide spectrum of his scientific interests is quite comprehensive, he is interested in all aspects of bio-medical research, namely in: mechanisms of prototyping, medical engineering, experimental physiology, molecular biology, pre-clinic animal investigations and creating experimental models, biomaterials, improvement and management of clinic investigations. During the last 5 years he focused his attention on angiogenesis, photo-therapy, cell transplantation, finding new methods for wound heeling, genetic therapy, drug eluting stens. Professor Nika Kipshidze actively delivers pedagogical (Medical College of Wisconsin, Mallouc) and doctoral services (Lenox Hill Hospital, New Yourk).

He is the author of more than 200 scientific papers, more than 400 abstracts, 18 innovations the copyrights of 14 of them are reserved in the USA, and for the remaining 4 – in the USSR. He is the author of 5 monographs. Currently he has edited and prepared for publication two more monographs: “Drug Coated Vascular Implants” and “Handbook of Cardiovascular Cell Transplantation”. The latter will be published in London. Mr. Patrick W. Serreys, the well-known Dutch scientist is the co-editor of the publication. Professor Nika Kipshidze is the member of the American College of Cardiology and Angiology, Association of Heart, International College and Union of Angiology, Academies of Science of New Yours and Washington, American Chemical Society, eastern German and Cuba Angiology Societies, Latin American and Greek Associations of Angiology, Honorary member of Ecuador Limphology Association.
