Dear Acad. Oniani,

It is hard to underestimate your role in the development of Georgian physiologic science; it is your activity and enthusiasm that made Georgian School of Physiology known all over the world. You carried out not only scientific, but social and pedagogic activities. For about 50 years you have been studying and developing the science, that is the corner stone of theoretic and practical medicine.

Academician Tengiz Oniani is the member of the International Organization for the Study of Brain, the International Society for the Study of Sleep, the International Sleep-Awareness Cycle Study Federation, the International Society for the Study of Biological and Social Aspects of Aggression, the Honorary Member of the Hungarian Society of Physiologists, he was rewarded with the Gold Medal of the Academy of the United States of America, and recognized with the Order of Honour for his professional and social activities. He was the director of the Institute of Physiology in 1975-1980, the Vice-President of the Georgian Society of Physiologists and Neurologists, co-organizer of several International Forums. Since 1980 he is the academician – secretary of the Department of Physiology and Experimental Medicine of the Georgian Academy of Science.

In 1995-1999 he was the member of the Georgian Parliament. Under the initiative of Acad. Tengiz Oniani and under the aegis of the UNESCO International Organization for the Study of Brain and the Academy of Science of the USSR the International Symposium – the Neurological Mechanisms of the Sleep-Awareness Cycle was need in Tbilisi in 1981. He is the author of more than 240 scientific publications (among them – 4 monographs), one of the co-authors of the Manual on Human Physiology (10 volumes). His scientific works were rewarded with state prices of Ivane Tarkhnishvili and Ivane Beritashvili.

We, Georgian internists, and members of the Georgian International Society of Cardiomyopathy, herein express our deepest respect and gratitude upon the 75th anniversary of your birthday.

“When I read the letter written by your colleagues and looked over the long way you have passed I was impressed by the fact that in such a complicated period you put the interests of Georgia and Georgian science on the first place. You are and always will be the example for the younger generations of our scientists”. – is mentioned in the letter of Mr. Eduard Shevardnadze, the President of Georgia.
