18th Congress of International Federation for Diabetes

Paris, August, 2003

At the 18th Congress of International Federation for Diabetes, which was held on 24-29 August in Paris, number of delegates reached the record –16 428. Diabetes – is the global pandemia. The nearest 20 years diabetes will be the same as the AIDS was for the last 20 years of the recent century – declared professor Paul Zimblit (Australia).
Diabetes destructs the whole body. “Therefore people suffering from diabetes should know well the essence of the disease and should be the real specialists of its control”- said Andre Ervuet, 60 years old patient suffering from diabetes. He was only 12 when he became ill. This member of the French Association for Diabetes is well aware in the matters of control of this heavy disease, has no problems and complexes and feels himself as practically healthy person.
The following associations and centers of Georgia took part in the Congress: Georgian Federation for Diabetes, Georgian Center for Diabetes, Association of Defense of Diabetic Children, Children’s Clinic for Endocrinology, Medical Academy of Georgia, Georgian Medical University. The delegation from Georgia was headed by the president of the Federation, professor Ramaz Kurashvili, who, alongside with many posters delivered a report to the Congress. The report was followed by interesting discussion. Professor Ramaz Kurashvili appeared on the fourth place according to the number of papers submitted to the Congress and his “National Village of Diabetics” was highly estimated by the foreign experts. The authors of the reports and posters were: R.Kurashvili, N.Asatiani, M.Gordeladze, D. Metreveli, M.Khelashvili, N. Bikashvili, L. Tsutskiridze, T. Chijavadze, I. Lebanidze, T. Akhobadze. One of the posters, which was submitted to the symposium of European Group of the Urgent Aid for Diabetes gained positive appraisal and a relevant prize.
