On October 15-16, 2003, a joint American-Georgian
symposium on Biomedicine was held in the Metekhi-Palace Hotel, in
Tbilisi. Amiran Gamkrelidze, Minister of Labour, Social Well-fare and
Public Health, Acad. Albert Tavkhelidze, President of the Academy of
Sciences of Georgia; Prof. Tengiz Tsertsvadze, Director of the
Infectious Pathology, AIDS and Clinical Immunology Scientific and
Practical Center, Gerald Kioshi, International Trial Director of the
USA-JoeAnn Center and Director of the Fogart International Center; David
Lenderman, Director of the Co-operative grant Program of the CRDF; Mr.
Robert Torato, Director of the Program for the Development of
Biotechnologies; James Boner, Vice-Director of the Caucasian office of
the International Development Agency of the USA and scientists of the
Caucasian regions participated in the Symposium.
Specialists from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and Russia took active
part in the work of the Symposium. The 2nd American-Georgian Symposium
worked in a larger formant, such fields of medicine as oncology,
narcology, smoking cessation problems were included. It is worth
mentioning here that a large number of Georgian specialists under took
postgraduate training in the leading Centres of the USA under the
support of the Fogart International Centre. About 40 specialists from 21
medical centers and organizations participated in the Symposium. Mr.
George Kioshi in his speech gave high evaluation of the Symposium:
“Co-operation with you throughout all these years was very result full;
we were the witnesses of the enlargement of joint Projects that became
possible only due to activation of the Georgian scientific potential. |
