Situational analyses of Onkology service in Georgia

Cancer has II-ND rank place in diseases incidence and mortality structure in Georgia. In 1988-89 , 7000 new cancer cases were revealed (140,0 per 100 000 of population).This figure decreased to 3100 ( 64,2 per 100 000 of population), and the total number of cancer patients from 32000 to 23600 (from 627,0 to 511 per 100 000 of population) in first half of 90-ies. The mortality rates have also changed from 5400 to 3040 (from 100,3 to 62,8 per 100 000 of population), concerned with social- and political challenges in the country.

IN 1997-2002, 4500 - 5400 new cancer cases were registering (100,0 -120,0 per 100000 of population), the total number of patients raised to 24500 — 26500 (542,0 - 585,0 per 100000 of population ). The mortality rates registration also has improved (from 62,8 to 85,0 - 96,0 per 100000 of population).
In 2002, in both sexes, the breast cancer ranked the I-ST place - 1040 (19,5%), II-ND - lung cancer - 660 (12,4%), III-RD - stomach cancer - 392 (7,4%), IV-TH - cervical cancer - 260 (4,9%), V-TH - uterus cancer - 223 (4,2%).
In females cancer incidence structure - the I-ST place ranks the reproductive system - breast, cervix, uterus and ovarian - cancer , and in males - lung, stomach, larynx, prostate and liver cancer.
The ratio of advanced forms of cancer is still high in new cancer cases: I-II stages - 29,6%, III stage - 21,8%, IV stage - 48,6%.
